John Smbat III

John Smbat III
Bagratid king of Armenia (qq.v.) who reigned ca. 1020-1042. The reign of his father Gagik I (q.v.) was the highpoint of the Bagratids, but Smbat's own reign was weakened by internal strife. Basil II (q.v.) used this weakness to demand that upon Smbat's death Byzantium (q.v.) would acquire the Armenian kingdom of Ani (q.v.), a demand to which Smbat agreed.
